Kenneth Farnes was a very tall fast bowler for Cambridge University, Essex and England who claimed ten wickets on debut against Australia in 1934. Injuries restricted the playing opportunities of this fine player, who was killed aged 30 during pilot training in 1941. Graham Gooch could only improve after making a pair on his test debut against Australia in 1975. During his subsequent long career, he became England’s highest run scorer - and the most consistent batsman in the country in all forms of county cricket for Essex. Gooch blossomed as England’s best batsman during his time as captain. He made the highest test score at Lords of 333 against India in 1990. His greatest innings came a year later, when he resisted the all powerful West Indies for a superb match-winning, unbeaten 154.
